Anyone bold enough to say outrageous things “on main” is pretty wild, considering how their privacy, personal work, or business could be on the line. For businesses, it’s nice to know that a human being is running their social media account, but when they start saying some outrageous things, people are going to notice. And locals of Cincinnati, Ohio, definitely took notice when Marcella’s Doughnuts & Bakery left a “puke emoji” comment on a post announcing Midwestern Lesbian’s opening an office in the city.
“Sending homophobic hate comments from your business account is crazy work,” remarked Facebook user Jordan Mcdonald, calling out Marcella’s for its ridiculous bigotry on main. Needless to say, countless people did not let the doughnut shop get away with the “needlessly cruel“ comment. Many began leaving reviews with the same puke emoji, with plenty of others leaving their own criticisms on the Facebook page. This resulted in Marcella’s actually privating its account from all the backlash. Who could have possibly seen this coming?
Sarcasm aside, the homophobic donut shop ended up making an apology on Instagram: “We’re sorry for the harm caused and are committed to doing better moving forward.” Unfortunately for the business, very few sympathized with the statement, instead criticizing the shop for apologizing for its mistake instead of its bigoted viewpoint. “It’s always better when businesses expose themselves this way. Saves us from spending any money there,” remarks a Redditor. “A rainbow donut being the featured product on their website is a bit ironic,” laughed another.
In the end, no matter how delicious its pastries, donuts, and desserts are, Marcella’s Doughnuts & Bakery has permanently tarnished its reputation. Just one simple emoji has likely cost the business a good chunk of revenue and harmed the reputation of the employees working there who were unrelated to the incident.
