As if sent from the heavens, CD PROJEKT says Cyberpunk 2077 is still on schedule for its September 17 release date.
This news is delightful. The past few weeks have been a mixed bag for gaming news. It’s been awesome to see studios and companies support players with free and discounted products/services. Surely these moves are beneficial for businesses, but they’ve brought gamers together, and I love that.
The good times stopped with the indefinite delays of The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR. It’s never fun when highly anticipated games get delayed, but given the state of the world, delays are inevitable. As a result, gamers have responded with a whirlwind of speculation about which other titles will be pushed back. Many, including myself, assume this summer’s (sigh) Ghost of Tsushima’s will be delayed. Others question the next-gen consoles’ 2020 release entirely.
Cyberpunk 2077 is safe…for now
In an effort to report the company’s current position, CD PROJEKT posted to its site on April 8. The post addressed the company’s financial standings, successful 2019, and future plans.
To briefly summarize, 2019 was an outstanding year for CD PROJEKT. Its sales revenue was 44% greater than the preceding year, and its consolidated net profit increased by 60%. The success was in large part due to the continued excellent sales numbers of The Witcher 3. This news doesn’t come as a surprise considering the game’s recent launch on the Nintendo Switch and its fantastic Netflix series.
After relaying all the financials, CD PROJEKT addressed Cyberpunk. Like most of us, the entire team at CD PROJEKT is working from home. Executives credit the ability to work through tough times to its consistent debt avoidance and accumulated cash reserves. Also, President and CEO of the CD PROJEKT Group, Adam Kiciński added:
There is no shortage of motivation and we also possess all the tools needed to facilitate remote work. We’ve been operating in this mode for over three weeks and to-date results confirm that we can carry on with all our operations without major disruptions. Our plans haven’t changed – we’re steaming towards the September release of Cyberpunk.
Is a Cyberpunk Release Realistic?
This all sounds like great news. The teams over at CD PROJEKT have always been dedicated to their craft, and their confidence is warming. That said, you shouldn’t take their statements as a full guarantee. We have no idea what will happen in the coming months. Hopefully, everything will be back to normal by the summer, but nothing is promised. The economic landscape of the world is going to have to reset, and there’s no telling what that will look like until the time comes.
It does look like Cyberpunk will be arriving this September, barring any setbacks. Take the update with a grain of salt, but feel comfort in knowing that one of the hottest games of 2020 should arrive as scheduled. With Cyberpunk 2077’s confirmation and the planned arrival of PS5 and Xbox Series X, 2020 may still be a successful year for gaming.
