Dangerous $1,600 Table Broken by 3-Year-Old at New Jersey Café, Mom Left Astounded by Their Response: ‘Too Bad for Them, the Internet’s Forever’

Personally, it’s absurd that a console table costs that much

As they say, kids do the darndest things. Unfortunately, this means that you’re probably going to experience some embarrassing moments as a parent. But what happens when that embarrassing moment goes a step further and ends up costing you? This is what a mom in New Jersey recently went through when she decided to take her daughter to a café. Some drama involving an expensive table landed her in hot water and now she’s looking for advice.

TikToker Katthy Denman (@beautihut) shared a recent embarrassing story involving her 3-year-old at a New Jersey café. She explains that she took her 3-year-old daughter and her mom out for coffee and ice cream at Hazel Boutique in Lavallette. As she went to get the coffee, she told her mom and daughter to wait at a nearby table. As she was paying for their coffee, she heard a loud bang. She turned to check on her family and noticed that her daughter accidentally pushed over the table.

Now, why was it so easy to push over a table at a restaurant in the first place – especially knowing her daughter is literally 3 years old? Katthy couldn’t figure this out. She found the stone table in various smashed pieces on the floor. The table, sold by Anthropologie, was not just a regular table. It’s a very expensive table to the tune of $1,600.

Katthy attempted to comfort her frightened daughter. However, she had to get on a phone call with the cafe owner. As Katthy said, “Things went down a way that I could have never anticipated or expected.” Whereas the barista was telling her everything would be fine, the owner was not too kind. They hit her with, “The table is almost 2 thousand dollars.” They proceeded with, “You can’t leave until I have your license and a credit card.” Katthy was upfront with them about her contact information but said she wasn’t going to stand there while her child was panicking.

The owner wouldn’t let Katthy leave and kept repeating, “You break it, you pay for it.” Katthy felt scared, embarrassed, and totally humiliated by the encounter. She also thought it was unprofessional that the owner didn’t ask if her daughter was okay. In the end, Katthy left with her daughter.

Thanks to TikTok sleuths, Katthy discovered the expensive table isn’t a dining table. It’s a console table. Also, a now-deleted video on the café’s social media shows the table almost being pushed over by a group of friends. This just proves in Katthy’s defense that the table wasn’t as sturdy as the café previously thought.

Commenters rushed to Katthy and her daughter’s defense. One person said, “The most concerning thing to me is that the establishment is more concerned about a table than a 3 year old and if they are ok.” Another helpfully stated, “This isn’t a situation where your daughter broke something. This is a situation where an establishment didn’t secure their heavy furniture and are lucky no one got hurt.” Social media pulled through for Katthy and I hope that she found a resolution. I also hope she didn’t actually have to pay for the table.
