Mother Earth hasn’t been too kind during the first days of 2026, and those in Juneau, Alaska, know what we’re talking about. For the unaware, however, residents in this city faced one of the worst snowstorms in recent memory. While snowstorms are quite common in this area, the truth is that this one left widespread destruction in its wake. Besides affecting streets, businesses, and other areas, the Juneau harbor was among the hardest hit, as several people woke up after the snowstorm to find their boats underwater.
Winter might be a beautiful time of the year for many, but it is quite dangerous for Juneau residents. In the past days, a snowstorm hit the city, causing a lot of havoc and claimed many boats.
As you can see in the video above, the storm sank at least nine boats in the harbor. You can see how a couple of them are barely floating, while others are completely sunk. At first, the clip only focuses on one boat, showing that half of it is still floating, while the other half is underwater. Yet it quickly turns to show the other part of the area, and you can see most of them buried under snow.
According to official sources, the Juneau authorities are doing their best in the recovery efforts, while schools and several other businesses remained closed during the storm. In terms of other boats in the harbor, authorities have said that they are trying to rescue a few of them. However, they need to wait until the snow melts to see which ones are worth salvaging and which need to be disposed of.
In any case, this situation alarmed a lot of people who saw the aftermath of the storm, with a few of them surprised that some boats were still standing.
“Bummer, surprised more boats aren’t crushed, or maybe they are and we won’t know until it thaws,” said Flightwatcher45.
Some Reddit users with a bit more boat knowledge claim that some of the boats weren’t in top condition, which could have led to some of them sinking, and a few staying afloat.
“The issue is heavy accumulation of snow, not freezing surface water. And frankly, that particular boat looks like it is poorly maintained anyway,” commented Unfair_Negotiation67.
Regardless of how well-maintained the boats were, the truth is that this is an unfortunate situation for all. We can only hope the authorities continue the recovery efforts and that the snowstorm stops soon.
