During the 30th PlayStation Partner Awards 2024, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree snagged the prestigious Grand Award for worldwide sales success. But that’s not the only surprise coming from the Japanese event. When interviewed by Japanese media GAME Watch, The Elden Ring and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed some tantalizing updates about the studio’s future. While he remained tight-lipped about the specifics, Miyazaki said that the FromSoftware team is working on ‘multiple’ new game projects within ‘various genres.’

“We have multiple projects currently going on, and they are in a wide variety of genres,” Miyazaki replied. “Some of them are directed by me, while others are handled by others, so I think we’ll be able to show you a new FromSoftware in various ways, so please look forward to it.”

He added that despite there’s always huge expectations about FromSoftware’s new games, he always has ways to take his mind off. Spending time with his family and playing games do the trick, according to Miyazaki. “I’m not the type of person who feels pressured in the first place, so I rarely have a strong desire to relax,” he said.

Known for its brutal gameplay and punishing difficulty, FromSoftware cemented its legendary status with releases like King’s Field, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. It’s also famous for keeping the mecha genre alive in the industry through niche games like Chromehounds, Metal Wolf Chaos, and the Armored Core series.

However, back in the fourth console generation, or the PS2 era, the studio was responsible for cutesy, family-friendly releases as well. Those include cooperative platformers The Adventures of Cookies & Cream and the Monster Hunter spin-off series that focuses on Palicos’s daily life, Monster Hunter Diary.

Miyazaki’s comments might hint that its upcoming projects could go beyond its signature grim fantasy settings. While the specifics of these new games remain a mystery, the promise of a ‘new FromSoftware’ surely makes fans eagerly anticipating its next projects. One thing’s for sure though, FromSoftware isn’t just preparing for new ways to die — it’s crafting new ways to play.
