While the DCEU has had its share of mishaps, DC Comics is continuing with plans to expand its universe. One of the films that has been teased is one based on Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. The film, titled New Gods, will feature Darkseid and his Furies.
During a Q&A between New Gods director/writer Ava Duvernay and DC fans over Twitter, the acclaimed filmmaker answered inquiries regarding the film. Duvernay replied to two Twitter users where she confirmed that the Furies and Darkseid will be gracing the big screen. Fans know Steppenwolf’s appearance in Justice League was merely a precursor to a battle with the supreme ruler of Apokolips. It is important to note that the Marvel villain Thanos was based on Darkseid.

Darkseid and His Legions
For those that do not know about DC’s Fourth World, the New Gods mythos was the brainchild of comic book icon Jack Kirby during his tenure with DC Comics. The planets of New Genesis and Apokolips have been at war for longer than anybody can remember. To bring peace, the rulers of both planets traded their children: Highfather, the ruler of New Genesis, gave his son Scott Free to Darkseid, who in turn gave his second son Orion to his enemy. The trade created a ceasefire between the warring civilizations, though it did not last forever. Orion would grow up and fight against his lineage, while Scott Free would become a superhero in his own right, Mr. Miracle.
Darkseid’s forces include Parademons, monstrous troops, and his elite squadron, the Female Furies. Granny Goodness trained these women to be ruthless and deadly. The greatest Fury was known as Big Barda, who later defected and escaped with Mr. Miracle. While there have been many members, mainstays include Lashina, Mad Harriet, Bernadeth, and Stompa. The Furies have switched their allegiance multiple times throughout their comic history, but they always return to their masters in the end.
New Gods does not yet have a release date. Are you excited to see Darkseid and his armies appear in live-action format? Who do you think they should cast? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
