After Deadpool made an absolute killing at the box office (we were pretty big fans of it as well; check out our review), it seemed inevitable that the “merc with a mouth” would see a surge in popularity. Obviously, a sequel is in development, but a more surprising announcement is that an animated series starring Deadpool is coming next year to FXX (the sister network to FX).
IGN reports that the series is coming in 2018, it will start with a ten episode first season, and it will be an “adult action-comedy.” In even better news, the showrunners and head writers are Atlanta‘s Donald and Stephen Glover. This will be the second Marvel property to get a show through the FX networks, after Legion debuted in February of 2017.
Donald Glover is no stranger to the realm of superhero media: he has a role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, he voiced Miles Morales on the animated Ultimate Spider-Man, and he is also playing young Lando Calrissian in the 2018 Han Solo prequel film. In addition, Glover’s Atlanta will begin its second season in 2018, which also airs on FX.
Although no casting information has been released yet, it seems likely that Donald Glover will have a role in the upcoming Deadpool animated series. In addition to the Glovers, the show will be produced by Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory. Stay tuned for further details on the animated series as they become available; Deadpool 2 is scheduled to release to theaters nationwide in 2018.
Which is more exciting: Deadpool 2 coming in 2018, or an adult-oriented Deadpool animated series coming that same year? Provided Ryan Reynolds is out, who do you want to hear voicing the merc with a mouth? Let us know in the comments below.
