Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has never been the most popular figure but this latest news might make him even less so. Allegedly, he and his allies have been misusing Medicaid funds. Instead of putting that money toward medical services for people who truly need it, they reportedly decided it was better spent fighting against marijuana legalization.
You might be wondering how they pulled off this scheme. Well, it involved a lot of money transfers through nonprofit organizations. DeSantis had the idea to donate 10 million dollars to the Hope Florida Foundation. This is an organization founded by his wife. From there, the funds were shuffled to two more nonprofits. These nonprofits passed along 8.5 million dollars to fund efforts against legalizing marijuana in the state.
It is a pretty slick move, you have to admit. But unfortunately for DeSantis, they were not slick enough. People started to get suspicious. When reporters caught wind of the story, they quickly made it public and caught the attention of two Florida Democratic Representatives, Kathy Castor and Darren Soto. They immediately demanded an investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General and other officials.
What does Florida Governor DeSantis have to say about all this? He claims it’s a smear campaign aimed at stopping him from winning the upcoming election. However, Representative Alex Andrade disagrees. He has already called on the DOJ and FBI to investigate the matter.
Many people on the internet aren’t overly surprised that DeSantis has been involved in another questionable move during his political career. Some even mocked the governor for defending himself by calling the news a hoax. One Reddit user wrote, “I would very much love to see the DeSantis regime taken away in handcuffs for money laundering and Medicaid fraud. That would be delightful.”
On the other hand, a handful of people aren’t so optimistic. Many believe nothing will actually come from the investigation since Trump is still in power. One user commented, “So Democrats want an investigation. Republicans will stop that from occurring.”
Others pointed out that while Trump isn’t a great president, he actually dislikes DeSantis, noting that DeSantis is supporting Byron instead of him. Because of this, there might still be a chance for DeSantis to face justice. One user commented, “That makes it even sadder for him. He tries so hard to appeal to Trump. ‘Look daddy, I’m making the police and universities help ICE! Look daddy, I’m attacking FEMA too!’ And Trump still doesn’t like him, lol. You know that hurts his massive ego and tiny little Grinch heart, assuming he’s capable of feelings at all.”
