Hurricane season has long been an unfortunate part of American life. Many people have developed more than just a healthy respect for nature’s wrath. While there have been ongoing efforts to mitigate the damage caused by these destructive storms, concerns have grown significantly since Trump returned to office. Among those especially worried are the people of Florida, who are once again bracing for the upcoming hurricane season.
Amid rising anxiety, Governor DeSantis has attempted to reassure the public, but his recent statement that Florida is simply “due for a break” after last year has done little to calm fears. Many see it as an empty remark, especially as he downplays growing concerns over the deteriorating state of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). DeSantis argued that Florida has never relied on FEMA, claiming the state has always handled hurricanes on its own.
While the governor remains confident, not everyone shares his optimism. One Reddit user bluntly put it, “Oh, we are so f***ed this year, aren’t we?” Others mocked DeSantis for suggesting that Florida is “due for a break,” as if the government somehow has control over the weather. One user joked, “Well, he better tell the people in government responsible for the weather machine then.”
Some users argued that the 2025 hurricane season is shaping up to be worse than last year, in direct contrast to the governor’s hopeful outlook. Several pointed to the unusually high temperatures in May as a warning sign. “If this heat continues,” one commenter noted, “it’s going to be a disastrous hurricane season.”
Others highlighted the lack of rainfall, warning that even a moderate thunderstorm could cause severe flooding. “The lack of rain where I am is just begging for a flood,” one user wrote. “We’re boned unless something unforeseen swoops in to save us. But with cuts to the National Weather Service and the demonization of NOAA, I doubt we’ll even know how bad it is until it hits.”
Some users speculated that DeSantis might actually be hoping for a severe hurricane season to divert attention from his recent political controversies. For those unfamiliar, the governor was recently accused of misusing Medicaid funds and funneling money toward organizations that oppose marijuana legalization in Florida. DeSantis dismissed the allegations as a hoax intended to sabotage his chances in the upcoming election. Still, skepticism remains. As one user put it, “I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s hoping for a couple of big storms to distract from his money laundering and Medicaid fraud.”
