Destiny 2 director, Joe Blackburne, has taken responsibility for a controversial State of the Game blog which left fans disappointed after it failed to address their ongoing concerns about the game. Blackburne assured players that communication with the team would be improved. He also teased what to expect from next week’s Destiny 2 showcase which will focus on The Final Shape expansion.

The Destiny 2 director addressed the quality of the State of the Game post in a sixteen-minute video on his X account (above), which specifically addressed the complaints from fans. In the video, Blackburne states that the lackluster blog post was due to the team being busy focusing intensely on developing Destiny 2‘s The Final Shape expansion. Referring to the post he says:
“It didn’t provide the high-level vision that we normally provide. Really and truly a bunch of us were heads down, laser-focused on The Final Shape and weren’t able to give it the kind of care and love that we normally put into these kind of communications. That’s nobody’s fault but mine”
State of the Game blog posts are frequently shared with Destiny 2 fans to inform them about updates, patches, and new game modes. However, players were left despondent with the most recent post, which failed to address problems currently plaguing the game’s PvP mode and what the future holds when it comes to new maps being introduced.
Blackburne, in an effort to improve communication with the player base, will be streaming the game during its next season so that he can adequately respond to players’ concerns and queries. On PvP, he revealed that Destiny 2 will be moving away from “a small trickle of maps” and newly introduced ones failing to excel at anything. The PvP ‘Strike’ team is also being significantly bolstered and will be made up of developers with significant expertise.
Teasing next week’s Destiny 2 Showcase, Blackburne confirmed that it was not a response to the recent State of the Game post as it was filmed prior to August. He also revealed that The Final Shape will have a significant focus on story and characters and less on “wacky new themes or systems” to make the expansion as accessible as possible to new players.
