This past Sunday, Blizzard had to deal with a malicious attack known as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), causing Diablo 4 to go offline for hours. It began soon after the recent update when Diablo 4 players encountered difficulties while attempting to log in, which requires a constant online connection. These log-in complications persisted into the following morning. That is when Blizzard’s customer support Twitter account revealed the ongoing DDoS attack that they were actively trying to deal with.
Finally, on Sunday evening, the official Twitter account confirmed that the DDoS attack had ceased. However, precise details were not provided regarding whether Blizzard successfully neutralized the attack or if the perpetrators had just had enough.
Diablo 4 Fans Reacting To The DDoS Attack
As expected, disgruntled fans channeled their frustration through various social media platforms and online forums. One player said that he couldn’t log into the game for over 12 hours. While DDoS attacks have the potential to target any game developer and disrupt any video game at any given time, this particular incident serves as a stark reminder of Blizzard’s contentious decision to make Diablo 4 exclusively an online game, always susceptible to DDoS attacks. Consequently, players have once again called for the inclusion of an offline mode in Diablo 4. Since its launch earlier in June, Diablo 4 has encountered multiple instances of unplayability due to log-in issues.
In a prior incident earlier this month, the first player to attain Level 100 in Hardcore mode in Diablo 4 was left speechless when their character was irrevocably lost due to a sudden disconnection. Furthermore, just last week, another Diablo 4 player experienced the same issue after their level 91 Hardcore character, who had accumulated an impressive 172 hours of playtime, just vanished during a loading screen.
Despite facing setbacks like the recent DDoS, Diablo 4 had an immensely successful launch, swiftly becoming Blizzard’s top-selling game to date. It has garnered praise from both critics and fans alike. However, the pricing of microtransactions in Diablo 4 has raised eyebrows among some.
