Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will soon conclude the newest trilogy, but more films in a galaxy far far away are on their way. Disney has sent out a press release mapping out their plans for the beloved series. The release not only talks about plans for new Star Wars content but also details a change in plans for the upcoming Avatar sequels.

The biggest news is that there will be three new untitled Star Wars movies starting in 2022. These films are set to be released every other year on the pre-Christmas weekend. As to what they will be about is anyone’s guess. Most likely than not, the new announcements will be the Rian Johnson-led trilogy that was announced a few years ago.

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are also developing their own Star Wars content, but again, not much is known. With their experience on GoT, fans are hoping the duo’s new show could take place in the era of the Knights of the Old Republic.

Avatar and its much-delayed sequels have now been delayed a little longer. According to the press release, the first sequel will now open on December 17, 2021, instead of December 2020. From there, a new film in the series will hit theaters every other year until December 17, 2027. It’s been ten years since the first Avatar blew away the box-office, but whether or not four more sequels are warranted still remains to be seen.

The recent Star Wars news is a delight to fans as the future of the property remained in limbo. After Solo disappointed both critically and financially, Disney had reigned in their future Star Wars plans. The rumored Obi-Wan and Boba Fett movies are now on hold indefinitely.

It looks like the Mouse House isn’t going to make fans wait too long for more Star Wars content. With The Mandalorian set to debut in the fall on Disney+ and more films on the way, fans will have plenty of content and toys to buy for years to come. The force will be with us…always!

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens nationwide on December 20th, 2019.
