Mobile games are a dominant force in the gaming industry, with many companies choosing to focus their efforts on the mobile market. Surprisingly, Disney Interactive recently announced it was retiring close to 100 applications, claiming that it wants to focus on building “new and more engaging” games.

Affected games include Star Wars: Tiny Death Star and Star Wars: Assault Team, as well as other notable titles such as Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: Le Chuck’s Revenge for iOS and a number of Marvel titles. The Disney branch says the decision was difficult to make but needed to be done. There direct statement regarding the decision reads:

Although the decision was difficult to make, this will allow us to focus on building new and more engaging games. Some of these titles may still be available for download and playable; however there are no plans for future updates and active product support will no longer be provided. We appreciate your support and understanding.

This decision is most likely due to many of the games being based on movies that are no longer popular on a mainstream level. Many of the titles, such as Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon, Lone Ranger, Marvel: Avengers Alliance,Cars: Numbers & Counting, G-Force: Mooch Fly, Toy Story 3: Operation Camouflage are probably not generating as many downloads as they were when the were initially released. I believe that games are an important form of entertainment, and that they can uplift and inspire millions of people around the world. I love JRPGs, and dabble in many other genres, especially MOBAs.
