The Disney Plus Zorro series has found its head writer and showrunner with Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman, Deadline has reported. He will also executive produce the upcoming series for the streamer.
The modern reimagining follows Diego De La Vega as he returns to his home of El Pueblo de Los Angeles after a family tragedy. What he finds is corruption and injustice, forcing him to return to his alter ego, Zorro, America’s first superhero. Disney (via Deadline) describes the series as something with “California’s rich and diverse history, bursting with humor, sinister intrigue, romantic entanglements, and swashbuckling thrills.”
Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70s Show) will star as the titular character in the Disney Plus Zorro series. He will also executive produce with the showrunner. Gary March and John Gertz will executive produce. No other casting announcements have been made.
Disney Plus finds Bryan Cogman as its showrunner for the Zorro series
When it comes to the iconic character, it has been quiet since the 2005 movie that saw Antonio Banderas in the leading role. A crossover with Django by Quentin Tarantino was in the works, but the project is dead, as confirmed by writer Jerrod Carmichael. While he thought the work he did with the auteur director was “incredible,” they ended up planting the seeds for a movie that would be too expensive.
The Disney Plus Zorro series found quite the experienced writer for its leader. The showrunner won four Emmys for his work on Game of Thrones. He served as an executive producer on the fantasy series and wrote at least one episode in each season. For Amazon, he was a consulting producer on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It is not confirmed if he will have any part in the second season. He will also be working on Disney’s remake of Sword in the Store alongside its director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later).
