Disney’s Death on the Nile star-studded movie will be coming to theaters amid the Armie Hammer scandal. Originally owned by 20th Century Fox, due to the Disney/Fox merger in 2019, it is now owned by Disney. Disney’s Death on the Nile became a highly anticipated film after Murder on the Orient Express premiered in theaters in 2017. It was a box office hit grossing $373 million. SPOILER ALERT: Revealing at the end of Murder on the Orient Express, Branagh’s Poirot must hurry to solve a “Death on the Nile“. Setting up a sequel.
The sequel was filmed in 2019, with Kenneth Branagh returning to direct and star in the film. Disney’s Death on the Nile also stars Gal Gadot, Sophie Okonedo, Rose Lesie, Emma Mackey, Armie Hammer, Letitia Wright, Jennifer Saunders, Russell Brand, also reprising his role Tom Bateman, and Annette Bening.
Since the movie wrapped, Armie Hammer has made headlines in bad ways. Multiple women have come out against Armie Hammer, claiming abuse, manipulation, and coercion. Hammer has since denied the claims. Disney’s Death on the Nile was originally slated to come out in 2020, but due to the pandemic and claims, the studio decided to push back the movie to February of 2022.
Since the pushback of the film, the only thing that has come out of the movie is the trailer. And the trailer does not disappoint in showing love and tragedy. According to the 20th Century production president Steve Asbell in the Hollywood Reporter, “Ken’s sweeping, elegant vision for this classic story deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. We’re so proud of this film, our brilliant cast, and the stellar work that went into bringing Death on the Nile to screen” (McClintock).
Just like Murder on the Orient Express, this is a movie starring a cast of A-listers. Disney’s Death on the Nile is based on the book by the Queen of Murder Mystery herself, Agatha Christie. The book was released in 1937. Agatha Christie wrote about 75 books in her lifetime of 1890-1976. Agatha Christie’s novel Death on the Nile follows the story of a young, rich woman Linnet (played by Gadot), who finds herself in a web of love and tragedy.
Disney’s Death on the Nile will hit theaters on February 11, 2022.
