‘Does It Feel Like You’re Winning?’: Gavin Newsom’s 30-Seat Boast Draws Pushback Over California and Special Elections

Wait, 30-0?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted a Mecklenburg Democrats clip saying the party is “30-0” in statehouse races and that voters keep “showing up.” Replies quickly split over the boast, the room, and California.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted a clip Monday from a Mecklenburg County Democratic event showing him telling supporters that Democrats have flipped more than 30 state legislative seats since Republicans flipped none. In the post, he said Americans are “showing up” and that “Democrats are WINNING.” Online users quickly pushed back, pointing to California’s record and questioning the modest indoor crowd and the timing of the claim.

Americans are fed up — and they’re SHOWING UP.

The video shows Newsom speaking into a handheld microphone in an indoor Mecklenburg Democrats office, addressing a small group standing around campaign signs. In the clip he tells them, “Everything is backward in this country, but the one thing that remains stable is all of you,” then adds that they “keep showing up at No Kings rallies” and “keep showing up in record numbers all across the United States.”

He cites a “30-0” record “in state house races,” saying Democrats “have flipped and have won,” a claim that matches his accompanying post that Democrats flipped more than 30 seats from red to blue while Republicans flipped none. He closes the excerpt by saying Democrats “are showing up in record numbers, and that’s the thing Donald Trump didn’t count on.” The footage does not show the races themselves or what was said before or after the clip.

After the “30-0” Boast, the Comments Split

A smaller group treated the clip as a rallying point. One user wrote, “Alright! We’re gonna do it!”

Many others focused on the room itself and the “showing up” line. Commenters said, “Gavin, there’s like less than 15 people in that clip,” “That is not showing up,” and “Does it feel like you’re winning?”

A separate thread of replies turned the argument back to California. Users asked, “Why are you not doing your job as governor of California?” and argued that “Newsom is using your state’s tax dollars to campaign” out of state while residents “pay the highest taxes.”

Others challenged the 30-0 claim. One wrote that Republicans “still hold the majority of state legislative seats,” and another said, “You haven’t flipped anything — it’s not Nov 3 yet.”

For now, the clip is one more piece of Newsom’s midterm travel message and of the argument over what those statehouse results mean. Online, the exchange remains split between the “30-0” boast and questions about California, the crowd in the room, and how much the special-election record will matter in November.
