With all the outrage about Flock cameras these days, the last place anyone would want to worry about surveillance is in the privacy of their own home. That said, one California landlord might not be in the wrong for wanting to keep his property safe, but he’s definitely made his tenant more than uncomfortable by installing an indoor camera, right beside the bathroom.
Reddit user Rothmal, a renter who has been concerned about their landlord installing indoor cameras since December 2024, has recently posted quite the unsettling video on r/LandlordLove. The tenant posted footage they say is of a camera their landlord installed that watches people leave the bathroom and enter the kitchen. The camera is disturbing, to say the least, as it eerily follows the one filming walk from side to side. If a rented property were to earn awards for a dystopian atmosphere, this home might be a runner-up.
The Tenant Accused the Landlord of a Myriad of Red Flags
The camera isn’t the only thing Rothmal is upset about. The California tenant alleges that their landlord is “an animal abusing, wife beating, slumlord and needs to be put on the sex offender registry.” They claim the man is over 60 years old and has been caught kicking the neighbor’s cat and spraying them with a hose. The man also has been accused of being “creepy” with female tenants. However, they haven’t provided any proof of these other allegations beyond the video.
“Don’t move in here,” Rothmal wrote, warning others not to rent the property, which they claim is all they can afford. Needless to say, people in the comments were appalled and wondered why OP didn’t move out ASAP. “This is slumhouse for people that are on rock bottom, if I could afford somewhere else I would,” they explained in response.
As for the camera, commenters shared their thoughts, with the top commenter urging OP to unplug it. “This is insane, call the cops, contact the humane society or your local animal welfare- get him locked up for animal abuse at the very least, I’m sure they’ll look into his other abusive behavior,” exclaimed another user.
Other people believed the camera was being controlled actively by the landlord, while others claimed it was autonomous, though Rothmal didn’t confirm anything. What Rothmal did confirm was that the camera is facing the hallway, so technically it’s not aimed into the bathroom, though they alleged it probably can see into it.
To conclude, while the camera is most definitely a disturbing feature of the home, the other accusations have yet to be confirmed about the landlord. There’s also a lack of detail about the legalities of the camera’s placement or whether it’s actively controlled. Still, there’s no question that anyone in the comments, Rothmal included, would want to walk out of the bathroom every time and see a camera staring back at them.
