I’ve always believed that, while doorbell cameras offer safety and comfort to homeowners around the world, they can also be quite invasive. Something is unsettling about knowing that countless cameras are watching you without anyone actively monitoring them as you go for a walk in your neighborhood. However, when you need to investigate why pieces of truck shrapnel are lodged in your walls, it’s wise to check your doorbell camera for answers. That’s exactly what a Chicago, Illinois, homeowner discovered when various homes on their street were found to be damaged in some sort of explosion.

Home security camera footage captured the moment a truck exploded, damaging multiple homes in suburban Chicago. Police said the driver sustained minor injuries. Investigators believe a leaking propane tank being carried in the truck may have triggered the blast.

The footage in question shows a very normal-looking suburban road in Chicago, Illinois. You can see various vehicles pass by before, suddenly, a truck comes into frame, exploding shortly after. You can see the truck all but disappear as pieces of the exterior flew across the street. Fortunately, the driver only sustained minor injuries, though various commenters are not keen on believing that. One person said, “driver sustained minor injuries, bruh the truck straight evaporated.“

You can see parts of the truck hurl toward an SUV parked in the driveway of the house that captured the explosion. Luckily, it appears that residents and cars were not commuting close enough to sustain injuries. I can’t even imagine how terrible the situation would have been otherwise.

According to ABC News, the explosion was caused by a leaking propane tank in the truck’s back compartment. That’s also the reason that the driver survived; the force of the explosion forced the vehicle’s cabin forward, separating it from the rest of the vehicle. Remarkably, the explosion didn’t cause any fires. While the explosion itself was terrifying, I can only imagine how much worse it could have been if there had been flaming shrapnel, which would have worsened the situation significantly.
