Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has erupted onto the scene with an extremely impressive first week of sales all over the world, especially in Japan, showing that the classics aren’t going away anytime soon. According to the weekly top 10 sales charts from Famitsu (see below), Square Enix’s latest game has taken both of the top 2 spots (PS5 and Switch) and has sold more units than the other games on the list combined.
The remake has sold almost 827,000 units total (641,000 on the Nintendo Switch and 186,000 on the PlayStation 5) and has been sold out completely in Japan. Since the physical copies aren’t available, fans in Japan are opting for the digital version, and Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is estimated to cross the 1 million sales mark in just another week.
These numbers don’t just make it the best-selling game of the week, but actually the best-selling game in Japan for the entirety of 2024. This makes it the biggest game release in Japan since The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
To put things into perspective, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is one of the biggest releases of 2024, sold around 340,000 units in the entire first half of the year. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has done better in just a week.
