EA Lays Off Hundreds, Cancels Titanfall Extraction Shooter at Respawn

What a shame…

EA is letting go of anywhere between 300 and 400 employees as part of a new round of layoffs and restructuring at the California-based publisher, according to a report from Bloomberg. The layoffs include roughly 100 staff from Respawn Entertainment following the cancellation of two unannounced projects at the studio.

Among the canceled games is a project that was set in the Titanfall universe, described as an extraction shooter and codenamed “R7.” According to the report, the game was not close to completion at the time it was scrapped. The project was believed to be an attempt to build a new experience within the Titanfall setting, following a similar strategy to how Apex Legends expanded into the battle royale genre.

EA spokesperson Justin Higgs confirmed the layoffs in a statement, saying that this round of layoffs is due to “long-term strategic goals” and other such “priorities” and that these changes will help in the allocation of resources and employees for other projects. This is a lot of press talk for what we already know: this is just a cost-cutting measure after an internal project didn’t turn out how it was supposed to.

The timing of the layoffs comes just weeks ahead of EA’s scheduled Q4 and full-year 2025 earnings call on May 6, where the company is expected to outline its 2026 financial forecasts and discuss the recent restructuring efforts.

The report adds to a grim pattern across the games industry in 2025, with over 2,000 layoffs reported so far across nearly 60 companies. And this has been going on since 2023.

Rumors about a potential Titanfall 3 surfaced recently, with speculation suggesting a 2026 release window. However, industry insider Jeff Grubb has refuted these claims, stating that no new Titanfall sequel is currently in development.

The future of the Titanfall franchise remains uncertain, especially following the cancellation of Respawn’s extraction shooter set in the same universe. But with the competition in the space and how everyone is going free-to-play as well, the genre is getting a bit stale, with most players just picking one game and not showing much interest in moving to other, newer options.
