Actress Emma Roberts has given her take on Madame Web‘s underwhelming Box Office performance. The movie, directed by S.J. Clarkson and released in February 2024, saw Roberts play Mary Parker. She starred in the production alongside a cast including Sydney Sweeny, Isabela Merced, Dakota Johnson, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet. However, despite the star-studded cast, the movie struggled to attract the level of audience engagement for a Marvel-related production. Madame Web made approximately $100.3 million at the global box office, making it the lowest-grossing major superhero movie in over a decade.
Moreover, poor reviews trailed the production, including an 11% rating and a 57% audience approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. About five months after the film’s release, Emma Roberts spoke about why Madame Web flopped at the Box office. Despite the negative ratings, Roberts began by revealing to Variety that she enjoyed the movie.
“I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed that movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think, did an amazing job. She’s the reason I wanted to do that movie,” the 33-year-old said.
Emma Roberts then blamed Madame Web‘s box office failure on internet culture, mainly the urge to joke about everything.
“If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would have been different,” she said.
Roberts told the outlet that Madame Web‘s Box Office failure didn’t intimidate her. She said nobody in the industry could guess if a movie would pop or flop with audiences. “Things work; things don’t work. Everyone likes to act like they can predict if they’re going to work or they’re not. And the truth is, you can’t.” Most importantly, Roberts said she was unbothered about people having negative thoughts about something she had done as an actress. It is great to see Roberts defending Madame Web amid the criticism the movie has received. Although many saw the movie as being terrible, others loved it. Meanwhile, Madame Web is still streaming on Netflix. If you are yet to see it, go on and do so and share your thoughts.
