Emma Roberts is one of the many celebrities who has earned the nickname nepo baby. The young star is the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and niece of Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts. She began her acting career as a child and landed the lead role in the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous. The show ran from 2004 to 2007, and afterwards the star continued her acting journey.
Roberts has established herself as an A-lister with roles in films such as We’re the Millers. She also received praise for her work in the FX anthology series American Horror Story. Yet, with her success also comes criticism.
Emma Roberts Calls Out the Double Standard Regarding Nepo Baby Criticism
In Hollywood, it’s not uncommon for a celebrity to follow in their family’s footsteps. Michael Douglas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Peter Fonda are a few stars who’ve followed the acting path like their parents. The trend has continued with stars like Roberts, Dakota Johnson, and Zoe Kravitz.
However, in recent years, these celebrity offspring have received backlash and coined the new term “nepo baby.” Critics argue that these stars are only famous because of their last name and their family’s connections.
The nepo baby debate is an ongoing issue in Hollywood. Recently, Emma Roberts discussed the topic on an episode of the Table for Two podcast.
People like to say, ‘Oh, you know, you have a leg up because you’re a family in the industry.’ But then the other side to that is, you know, you have to prove yourself more. Also, if people don’t have good experience being to be with other people in your family, then you’ll never get a chance.
The Scream Queens actress went on to explain how women receive more criticism than men.
Young girls, I feel like, get it harder with the nepo baby thing. I don’t really see people calling out you know, sons of famous actors. Not that they should be called out. I don’t think anyone should be called out wanting to follow their dreams.
Roberts then joked that her aunt Julia’s friend, actor George Clooney is a perfect example. The Oscar winner is the nephew of the late singer and actress Rosemary Clooney.
I always joke, I’m like, ‘Why is no one calling out George Clooney for being a nepo baby? [His aunt] Rosemary Clooney was an icon.
Although many believe Roberts is just another nepo baby, the actress worked hard to reach her acting accomplishments. While she’s bound to face more criticism throughout her career, she’s not letting it bother her. The star’s film Space Cadet, which she executive produced will be released on Amazon Prime on July 4th.
