Disney fans who have been waiting for a follow-up to 2021’s Cruella may have some news to get excited about, as there’s been some movement in making a sequel finally happen. The iconic Cruella de Vil was played by actress Emma Stone in the first film, bringing to life the devious fashionista and Disney villain. Cruella 2 might finally be filming soon.
While speaking with Variety during a red carpet event for her recent film Poor Things at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Emma gave a small update on what is happening with Cruella 2. According to her, the movie may be set to start filming “Hopefully sooner than later… It’s a work-in-progress thing going on…We’ll see…” When asked how much she wanted to revisit the character in Cruella 2 Emma nodded while repeating her statement.
Upon its release in theaters, critics and movie-goers were positive about Cruella, highlighting the film’s costume design and use of visuals from the punk rock scene of 1970s London as a backdrop for the story. The film was able to reach a performance of over $230 million at the box office, which could potentially be much larger for Cruella 2 in theaters.
Disney fans know Cruella de Vil from her first appearance in the classic animated Disney film 101 Dalmatians released in 1961, and the character has remained popular in the decades that followed. A live-action remake of 101 Dalmatians in 1996 saw the villain played by Glen Close before finally being brought to the big screen once again by Emma Stone for Cruella in 2021. The movie was a continuation of an ongoing trend by Disney that reimagined some of its biggest animated films into live-action.
Emma Stone not only starred as the titular character but also was an executive producer on the first film. For now, everyone will have to wait for additional details as more work is done behind the scenes. With any luck, progress can be made on Cruella 2 and bring Disney fans more of what they loved from the iconic villain.
