Emma Watson‘s popularity took a hit when an Instagram-posted photo of her went viral last summer. In June 2023, the 34-year-old actress posed with brother Alex Watson as the two promoted the Renais Gin brand they co-own, but talk was less about the spirits and more about Emma’s somewhat bizarre look.
Smiling as she posed with her brother amid beachy rocks, Emma modeled an unusual, spiked dress that appeared held up by air alone. When The Daily Mail covered the actress’ “gravity-defying” dress, users were quick to mock her. Taking a particularly harsh swipe, one dubbed the outfit “ridiculous.”

Modeling a slate blue dress from Spanish designer Loewe, Emma highlighted her slender arms and shoulders as she rocked a strapless-effect gown in loose-flowing fabrics.
Turning heads as upward-facing spikes supported the dress, the Harry Potter star wore nothing beneath her dress as she and Alex both smiled, with her brother looking dapper in a near-matching shirt and khaki pants as he held a bottle of Renais Gin.
Sporting her slightly highlighted hair down and with a minimal face of makeup letting her natural beauty take center stage, Emma offered no caption other than IG handles for Renais Gin, her brother’s feed, plus Loewe.
Told Dress Looks ‘Ridiculous’
Users weren’t too kind. Over 200 fans liked a remark reading: “Maybe she identifies as an umbrella.“
Also popular was a comment from a user thinking that the dress itself was a hazard. “Looking foolish. That thing could easily poke an eye out. Btw, whatever happened to her acting career?” the fan wrote. Also trolling the Hollywood star was a user saying: “She bought the washing hanger out with her.”
Emma was likely paid handsomely for shouting out Loewe, a brand she’s featured more than once on her social media. The star mainly shouts out Prada Beauty, though. In 2022, she became the face of Prada’s Paradoxxe scent. She’s since expanded her grip on the endorsement space by fronting the brand’s entire Beauty division.
Despite the backlash, Emma’s beach dress post proved popular, earning her over 2 million fan likes. Meanwhile, a separate IG post in the same rocky setting last year offered a little more info as The Circle actress wrote:
“We took the gin, the dog and some really fly @Loewe clothes on holiday to do a first tasting of Renais with our nearest and dearest. We loved sharing it with all of you. 🥺 please get in touch if you would like to distribute us.”
Emma is followed by over 74 million on Instagram.
