Nearly three Decades after the sentencing of Lyle and Erik Menendez for the double murders of their parents, the brothers have a second chance at freedom. However, Erik’s wife Tammi Menendez believes the DA isn’t doing enough to see to it that the brothers attain this freedom soon after moving for their resentencing. Earlier this week, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon announced his decision to formally recommend a re-sentencing for the brothers to include the possibility of parole.
This followed the presentation of two new pieces of evidence that show Erik and Lyle’s parents José Menendez and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez sexually abused them. Subsequently, the DA proposed the brothers’ sentence, initially ruled as Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, be reduced to 50 years, with the possibility of parole.
Erik Menendez’s Wife Tammi ‘Grateful’ Yet ‘Disappointed’ After DA’s Recommendation
While Erik Menendez’s wife Tammi cherishes this new development and the possibility that her husband could someday come out of jail, she had some reservations, expressing disappointment that the DA did not do enough to ensure their immediate release. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday, Tammi Menendez, 62 revealed her bitter-sweet feeling, writing,
“Yesterday was a difficult and emotional day. I am grateful to DA Gascon for his courage to seek resentencing for Erik. I am naturally disappointed he did not go further and act on his own belief that Erik and Lyle have served enough time in prison.”
DA Gascón revealed his decision to seek a resentencing for brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez after their 1989 double murders in a press conference on October 24. Explaining his decision, the District Attorney noted that many within the office still doubted the brothers’ parents ever molested them despite the new evidence. While this group strongly believed that Lyle and Erik should remain in prison perpetually, others have softened towards the brothers in the light of the new evidence and wanted their immediate release.
Going further, the DA clarified that Erik and Lyle Menendez’s alleged abuse in no way excused the murders of their parents. However, after carefully reviewing both sides, he resolved to submit a recommendation for their resentencing to the court. With the recommendation successfully turned in on October 25, it falls on the judge to approve his decision, granting the Menendez brothers a chance to someday walk free, on parole.
