A grieving mom who recently lost her 5-year-old son to brain cancer is calling out her aunt on social media for choosing to celebrate her birthday on the same day as her young son’s funeral. The woman, who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, shared her story in two parts on TikTok.
She said that after she lost her son, she called her relatives to let them know of his passing and when the funeral would be. Since some of them would be traveling from out of town, the date that worked best for everyone ultimately fell on a Saturday. However, that date happened to be the same day her aunt had planned to celebrate her 54th birthday.
The woman admitted that while her aunt had informed her of her upcoming birthday, she did not know what date it was. “She told me about the party or whatever, but it went in one ear and out the other. Cause literally, I’m dealing with my sick child,” she said in the video.
Her aunt, she said, even after finding out about the funeral date, still sent out messages to the family that the birthday party was still on. This caused a huge rift within the family. A portion of them thought the grieving mom was being “inconsiderate” and “spiteful,” while others were on her side.
On the day of the funeral, the woman said her aunt attended with some family members but later left in the middle with about 15 others to go to her party. Her aunt did not speak to her, she claims.
The Family Shades Each Other on Facebook
The woman said her aunt later brought their family dispute to Facebook. The aunt allegedly made a post thanking everyone who came to support her on her birthday while subtly shading her niece and other family members who sided with her. She reportedly wrote, “I’ve learnt to tune out the noise, the ignorance, & the personal judgements people toss around. None of that matters when you’re surrounded by people whose presence speaks louder than anyone else’s opinions.”
The woman said her own mother tried to step in to get things back in order, but it spiraled even more. Other family members, including her sister and cousin, joined in. Degrading words were exchanged, and nasty accusations were also made.
As it appears, the conflict has also made its way to TikTok, with the woman titling her series, “My evil sick family.”
Netizens Weigh In On the North Carolina Family Dispute
It is no surprise that the story has caught many people’s attention. On TikTok, netizens were divided on who was right or wrong in this situation. Some sympathized with the grieving mother, with one person writing, “This is beyond sick smh especially while you’re grieving your child. There isn’t a party in the world that’s more important than showing up for you. Stay strong 🩵.”
Another said, “The moral thing to do is reschedule her Party for the next Saturday because she’s only gonna be 54. It’s not an important number.” Someone else remarked, “This is so disheartening on multiple levels.” A fourth comment read, “Lost for words! I’m so sorry 🥺 It literally be your own family seriously.”
However, another group of netizens sided with the aunt and felt she was within her right to hold her birthday celebration when she pleased. “You can’t expect everyone to feel like you feel!! And why couldn’t she have her party on the same day??” one wrote, echoing that sentiment.
So far, the North Carolina woman’s videos have gained more than 200,000 views and over 30,000 likes, as the situation continues to draw attention online.
