A video circulating on X shows South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott in a tense exchange with Meet the Press host Kristen Welker over inflation and household costs. In the clip, Scott attributes the issues to former President Joe Biden, while Welker notes that President Trump has been in office for two years and cites current inflation at 3.4%, along with tariff-related expenses. Online users reacted to the post, with many commenting on the back-and-forth.

Tim Scott: "The original sin of costs in America in the last eight years goes back to Joe Biden."

Welker: "President Trump has been in office for two years."

The video shows a segment from NBC’s Meet the Press featuring South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott speaking from Charleston, South Carolina, and host Kristen Welker in the studio. In the exchange, Scott says, “The original sin of costs in America in the last eight years goes back to Joe Biden,” and later states that Biden “took inflation up 21% while he was president.” Welker responds, “President Trump has been in office for two years.”

Scott replies repeatedly, “Let me finish. Let me finish. Let me finish. Let me finish,” before adding, “President Trump has brought inflation from a sky-high 21% over the Biden years down to under 5% and right now hovering near 4%.”

Welker interjects with figures, saying, “Inflation was at 3% when President Biden left office. It’s at 3.4% right now… Gas prices are over $4 a gallon, up over a dollar from a year ago. President Trump’s tariffs have cost American households nearly $2,000.” The footage is a split-screen broadcast from the August 23 episode.

Scott continues referencing Biden’s record, while Welker states, “But we’re not talking about Joe Biden, though. The Biden administration is over. We’re two years into the Trump administration.” The post text on X includes a condensed version of the same dialogue. Specific cost and inflation figures cited in the clip have not been independently verified here.

What X Users Are Saying About the Meet the Press Clash

Some users focused on Scott’s approach, with one writing, “They all got the talking points from Trump: keep lying and don’t stop for a second so there’s no time for the host to correct your lies.”

Another commented, “Excuse me, Kristen, I’m not done lying yet,” while a third said, “Still battling for Trump with lies.”

Other commenters offered a different view of the numbers, noting, “Yes, under Trump prices went up 3.4%, but under Biden prices went up 9%. 9 is more than 3, so perhaps Ms Welker needs a math class.”

A few simply observed that “Scott was schooled on MTP.”

The exchange has become one more entry in the continuing online discussion over inflation figures, tariffs, and political accountability for household costs under the Trump administration.
