As Grand Theft Auto 6 gears up for a massive November launch, many publishers are now avoiding the holiday period like a plague. After all, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just dominate a week. It will suck up attention and sales from everything around it for years to come. Launching anywhere near Rockstar’s juggernaut looks less like bold confidence and more like a death sentence. Perhaps that’s likely the dilemma Microsoft and Playground Games are facing as they try to lock in the Fable reboot’s release date around GTA 6.
According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, Fable‘s release date has reportedly been ‘pushed’ internally. That doesn’t mean a full delay, as developer Playground Games is still trying to hit its current plan. However, it is keeping a very close eye on GTA 6.
Grubb expects that if Fable slips past that launch window, it could land in December — but even that comes with risk. At that point, Microsoft might as well push the game outright into 2027 rather than force it to face head-on with Rockstar’s $1 billion blockbuster.
I’ll say that I’ve heard that Fable has been pushed internally. […] Apparently they’re still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of GTA 6. And so if it’s getting delayed beyond the release of GTA 6, that could push it into December, which might make it a prime candidate to get delayed into 2027.
That concern isn’t exactly overblown. Everyone knows GTA 6 isn’t just another big release; it is the big release of this year. For Playground Games, too, this is a very different kind of project from its usual Forza Horizon formula. The studio isn’t known for RPGs, let alone something this ambitious. It has promised a lot — meaningful choices, reactive villagers, and a world that remembers what you do. But just like Peter Molyneux and his famously sweet little lies in past Fable games, you have to wonder how much of that will actually deliver.
Nevertheless, a December release window isn’t exactly unfamiliar territory for Xbox’s flagship as well. Both Halo Infinite and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle also took advantage of the holiday stretch. Of course, they don’t have to fear losing sales to GTA 6, but it’s a period that Microsoft has made work when needed.
Right now, Fable is still slated for Xbox Series X, PC, and PlayStation 5 sometime in Fall 2026. But if Grubb’s report is accurate, the real decision might come down to one simple question. Ship near GTA 6 and sink, or wait until the storm passes.
