Wait, the baseline?

Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) posted on X that Michigan has lost 12,000 manufacturing jobs in the year and a half since President Trump took office, saying his economic policies are contributing to the decline. The post, which included a video breakdown, drew hundreds of replies from online users who challenged the figure. Many cited Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing a net gain in manufacturing employment since January 2025 and pointed to larger losses under prior administrations. The exchange has prompted ongoing debate over the numbers and their framing.

How is manufacturing doing? Well, Michigan has lost 12,000 manufacturing jobs in the year and a half since President Trump took office.

President Trump’s economic policies are certainly contributing to the loss of these manufacturing jobs. I break it down. pic.twitter.com/laYTYuP2lk

— Sen. Elissa Slotkin (@SenatorSlotkin) October 19, 2026

In the clip, Slotkin speaks directly to the camera and states, “In Michigan, manufacturing is a huge part of our economy. 2.4 million people work in some form of fashion, either in a manufacturing job or in a company or in an industry that supports manufacturing.”

She continues, “When President Trump took office in January of 2025, 595,000 Michiganders were working directly in a manufacturing job; fast forward a year later and we have lost 12,000 jobs in manufacturing specifically in that time.”

The video shows her listing specific examples of recent layoffs and noting that “the tariffs have impacted our manufacturing more than most,” while adding that “President Trump’s economic policies are certainly contributing to the loss of these manufacturing jobs.”

According to the post and video, Slotkin attributes part of the decline to policy uncertainty, tariffs, and shifts involving batteries, artificial intelligence, and robotics.

Bureau of Labor Statistics figures show Michigan manufacturing employment stood at 578,700 in January 2025 and 583,300 in August 2026, a net increase of roughly 4,600 jobs over that period. The December 2024 figure was 595,600. Slotkin’s baseline of 595,000 therefore begins before Trump’s inauguration.

How Viewers Are Responding to the Manufacturing Jobs Claim

Many users challenged the 12,000-job figure and the baseline used. One wrote, “Fake News! Senator Slotkin’s claim is false. BLS data shows Michigan manufacturing employment at 578,700 in January 2025 when President Trump took office, not 595,000. By August 2026, it was 583,300, a net gain of about 4,600 jobs, not a 12,000 loss.”

Another stated, “We rate this claim FALSE. The Senator is counting from Dec. of 24. From Dec. 24 through Jan. 25, 16,900 manufacturing jobs were lost in MI.”

Several commenters pointed to larger earlier declines and state-level factors. One noted, “Michigan lost far more manufacturing jobs under @gretchenwhitmer than in the last 18 months,” and added that “BLS data: ~629k jobs when she took office in Jan 2019 → ~596k by late 2024 (net loss of ~30k+ before Trump).”

Others argued, “The democrats have been in charge of Michigan the entire time,” and “That’s a Whitmer policy problem.”

A smaller group of replies agreed that “the tariffs have impacted our manufacturing more than most,” even as they still questioned the overall job-loss number and the starting date she used.

The post just added one more round to the back-and-forth over Michigan’s manufacturing job numbers and which starting point people use. The conversation is still focused on that baseline and how the sector has moved under different administrations.
