There’s nothing better than getting the whole family around the dinner table for some quality time sharing a fancy meal together. Not only is it great for family bonding and a way to catch up on what’s going on in everyone’s lives, but it’s also beneficial for your overall well-being. Problem is, though, there are times when things don’t go entirely to plan. In fact, recently, a family from Los Angeles endured a long drive to visit one of the top-rated steakhouse restaurants in California, but due to several “plot twists”, the mom was forced to eat alone in the car in the parking lot. Well, she wasn’t totally alone, as she had to look after the family dog as well.
The video is gaining traction over on TikTok, and opens with the caption, “My husband ended the night by apologising to my mom. For taking her to a top rated steakhouse and making her eat in the car.” To help set the scene, the clip centers on an Asian-American family, who comprise of a young husband and wife, along with the wife’s mother, and their cute doggo. At the beginning, the husband and mother are sat in the front seats of their vehicle in the parking lot of said Dunsmoor steak restaurant.
“Mom, I’m so, so sorry about that. So sorry. That was totally my mistake.” expresses the husband, while placing a hand on her shoulder in a bid to appease his wife’s mom. Sporting a green scarf and black top, the mom kindly replies, “I’m so, so, so okay.” with a genuine smile. The video then cuts to an explanation of what happened.
“We thought it would be a cute little family outing. Just the three of us. Of course, Bao picked a restaurant that was literally rated number one steakhouse in the US, so we were ready.” explains the wife, as footage of the delicious food they ate during their meal flash up on the screen, like grilled asparagus and a juicy, buttery steak. “But plot twist. No outdoor seating, meaning no dog. And another twist. Walk-ins only seat two. So my mom and Bao made the sacrifice. They volunteered to wait in the car so our long drive wouldn’t be for nothing. Not exactly the bonding moment we pictured.”
While the mom waited in the car with the doggo, the wife took food out of the restaurant and delivered it to the car to keep mom satiated. “I end up doing laps, cutting up steak into bite-sized pieces, grabbing food from the restaurant, and running it back like their personal server.“
“So, in the end, my mom got her steak. Bao got a couple bites, too. And somehow it turned into this super funny night that we will always remember.” surmises the wife, happily. Concluding the video is a short snippet of footage showing the family together in the car after the “funny” meal. “It ended up just being a little date night for Wei and I.” exclaims the husband, before admitting, “I should have called them.”
As the video garners interest from around the internet, viewers flooded the comments to air their thoughts on the unconventional family meal. One user opined, “As a mom, I wouldn’t mind doing this for my children. As a daughter, I wouldn’t allow this to happen to my mom.As a mom, I wouldn’t mind doing this for my children. As a daughter, I wouldn’t allow this to happen to my mom.”
Elsewhere, a second commenter chimed in with, “the white man came first bruh” while another added, “So I totally understand Asian American moms being okay with things and not making a big deal out of things to not make their kids feel bad. Maybe there’s a dynamic we as viewers don’t see. But this just feels terrible for your mom. I feel like this could have been handled so many different ways that didn’t lead to excluding your mom and having her wait in the car :/“
Honestly, in an ideal world, I feel like the family should’ve called the steakhouse beforehand to make sure that there was room for everyone. Frankly, at the point where they realized their plan had gone awry, as adults, they should’ve come up with a better alternative and gone to a different restaurant. But, hey, each family is different, and they seemingly managed to turn it into a memorable adventure, so I guess it’s a happy-ish ending. I just feel sorry for the poor mom!
