One of Kentucky’s most famous stars, Jennifer Lawrence, has officially joined Instagram, giving the famously social-media-shy actress a direct connection to millions of followers. However, her arrival also revives questions about whether one of Hollywood’s biggest stars will use that audience to discuss American politics.
The Kentucky-born actress launched her account under the name @jlaw, explaining that her full name was already taken. In her first Instagram video, Lawrence established one humorous but uncompromising rule for followers.
“If anyone says anything negative, I will quit. Immediately. No questions asked,” Lawrence warned. “If anyone thinks something mean, I’ll know. I’ll know. And I’ll quit.”
Fans and fellow celebrities quickly welcomed Lawrence to the platform. One commenter called the debut “absolutely incredible,” while another pleaded, “No one better ruin this for us!” A third celebrated the unusually positive response, writing, “I have never seen internet be so collectively on the same side as this.”
Kentucky Fans Didn’t Forget Her Political Stance
The account gives Lawrence a new platform months after she questioned whether celebrity political commentary accomplishes anything beyond deepening America’s divisions. This, of course, caused problems at the time, and this fresh post reopened some of those old wounds.
Lawrence previously supported Kamala Harris and openly criticized Donald Trump. However, she said that election results had convinced her that celebrities do not influence how people vote.
“So then what am I doing?” Lawrence asked, according to The Guardian. “I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the country apart.”
One fan said, “She’s trying to relate to the everyday liberal white woman. Now she’s going to start posting stupid, condescending messages about conservatives.”
