Actor Kevin Guthrie, who played Abernathy in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, has been sentenced to 3 years of prison for sexual assault.
According to the BBC, the Sunshine on Leith actor has been sentenced to prison and also been indefinitely placed on the Scotland sex offenders register for assaulting a woman in Glasgow. Giving the actor the verdict, Sheriff Tom Hughes told him, “The court must show that women can be protected from domestic sexual offences. The jury accepted that you committed these heinous crimes and the only appropriate sentence is imprisonment.”
The decision to put Guthrie under the Scotland sex offenders register was taken after a 4-day trial. The actor, who was also seen in movies like Dunkirk, Edie, and Concrete Plans, has denied the charge claiming he was only trying to help the woman after she supposedly fell ill.
Evidence was strongly against Guthrie as it was revealed that part of his DNA has been traced on the girl’s underwear. This is not the first Fantastic Beasts actor who will be dropped from the movies, as actor Johnny Depp confirmed he will no longer play the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming installment.
The incident, which took place in 2017 at actor Scott Reid’s apartment, is said to be a consequence of the woman’s meeting with the actors. She, reportedly, fell ill while on her way to Reid’s apartment in the taxi and had to be helped afterwards.
It has been revealed that Reid, in order to call the National Health Service helpline, left Guthrie alone with the woman. Later, the woman complained that she remembered her shirt being taken off and her breasts being groped as she was assaulted by the Fantastic Beasts actor.
Guthrie, who first portrayed Mr. Abernathy – a minor character – in the first film, reprised his role in the second installment where the character was seen as a follower of Gellert Grindelwald. It is yet to be confirmed whether he began shooting for the 3rd movie but it is widely believed that his role was under strict scrutiny since the sexual assault rumors first began.
