Star Wars fans might have just gotten a jolt of excitement last night when Fate of the Old Republic was revealed in The Game Awards 2025. Many have waited over twenty years for a true successor to the original KOTOR series. Considering that The Old Republic MMO failed to satisfy the demand for a single-player RPG experience. However, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier suggests we should temper our expectations as Fate of the Old Republic could easily miss even a 2027 release window.
“Exciting news for lots of people… but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year,” wrote Schreier on Bluesky. “Which means that 2030 is an optimistic guess. Maybe it’ll be a PlayStation 7 game.”
On StarWars.com, Lucasfilm Games confirmed that Hudson just co-founded Arcanaut Studios “this year.” The post also mentioned that Fate of the Old Republic is still in the “early stages of development and creation.” That means the studio is still building a team, establishing its pipeline, and hammering out the game’s vision. Huge chance that the teaser we see below is really just a CGI promo video, and the actual playable version is likely far from ready.
After all, massive single-player RPGs take years even for established studios. The original Knights of the Old Republic took BioWare roughly three years with a full team behind it. Mass Effect and The Witcher 3 each needed around four years of development at experienced studios. While Bethesda’s Starfield stretched closer to five-to-seven years of development process.
The only outliers were KOTOR II and Fallout: New Vegas, which were completed in an extremely tight 14–16 month window. Largely because Obsidian reused predecessor assets and was notoriously rushed for both projects, cutting many planned features.
So when you line those comparisons up, Schreier’s 2030 estimate stops sounding pessimistic; it’s simply realistic. Still, thanks to that reality check, many fans are quick to voice their skepticism about the project.
“It’s another game awards when we get yet another ambitious Star Wars title announced (and early)…which the actual future of existing is to be seen, or it’s already dead,” replied jononarf.bsky.social disappointed. “1313, Knights of the Old Republic remake, Eclipse, And now Fate of the Old Republic.”
“How many Star Wars Game and film projects have been cancelled just in the last decade?” added Vinewood O.G.
“Yeah iirc his prior studio humanoid was unfortunately shut down either earlier this year or last. I feel like this trailer was also a recruitment tool,” Matt McCulla chimed in.
Despite the long wait, though, Hudson is focused on “creative clarity” and a “crisply organized production plan” to realize Fate of the Old Republic. Hudson adds, “That’s ultimately what makes it possible to deliver a game that meets high expectations.”
He and Arcanaut Studios believe they will deliver on fundamental pillars of the franchise. Such as “innovative storytelling, memorable characters, challenging gameplay, and immersive agency” in the Star Wars universe.
