The FBI confirmed today that it purchased a number of armored luxury BMW X5s specifically for the use of FBI Director Kash Patel. The FBI stated that Patel had requested them for his travels in the hopes it would make him less conspicuous as he travels around Washington D.C. The purchase was made using taxpayer dollars.
In the past, FBI directors traveled in American-made Chevrolet Suburbans, with German-made BMWs reserved for transporting other officials and diplomats. This purchase comes after another Patel was criticized for using a private FBI plane for personal use. He requested funds to purchase a new private jet. He has also purportedly requested FBI agent escorts for his girlfriend.
According to Forbes, House Democrats have started an investigation into how Patel has used taxpayer dollars. They will review his international communications, travel records, and other records.
The news of this most recent BMW purchase immediately sparked online interest. People are outraged by his continued misuse of taxpayer funds and the resources at his disposal.
“Is this America First?” one X user asked. “Sounds more like Germany and Kash Patel first to me.”
One user on Reddit chimed in, saying that “Nothing says ‘Make America Great Again’ like a BMW.”
Patel is a longtime supporter of Trump. He has written conservative children’s books, sold Trump merch, and appeared at multiple press conferences in support of Trump’s controversial politics. In one of his books, he included a list of “enemies” that listed those who were disloyal to Trump. However, he denies that the list implies the president seeks to punish those who disagree with him.
Will the checks and balances intended to guard against abuses of power by government officials be applied to Patel? In recent weeks, those checks and balances have seemed almost nonexistent, with the intermittent release of the Epstein files and other scandals. Will the FBI Director be one of many recipients of presidential favor? It certainly seems like it. The purchase of the BMWs, the number of which the FBI failed to disclose, is definitely a misuse of his power, however.
