Final Fantasy XIV can always be counted on for creativity regarding new job additions. The Dawntrail expansion looks to build on this by adding the Viper job. However, Dawntrail’s second new job is where things get artistic. Square Enix unveiled the Pictomancer job at the Japanese Fanfest, and it doesn’t disappoint. Let’s discuss everything we know about the FFXIV Pictomancer new job and its role in a party.

FFXIV Pictomancer Role

Pictomancer is not a completely new job in the Final Fantasy franchise. It was first introduced in Final Fantasy VI with the character Relm Arrowny.

The FFXIV Pictomancer is a ranged magical DPS job. It fills a niche similar to the Red Mage, Summoner, and Black Mage. However, its magic revolves around creating magical works of art to both hurt enemies and help allies.

The FFXIV Pictomancer utilizes a brush and palette as its weapon combination. However, we imagine these come as a package deal and not two separate weapons like the Paladin sword and shield. Furthermore, the job will wear casting gear.

Is Pictomancer a Support Job in FFXIV?

The FFXIV Pictomancer iteration is slightly different from how the job functioned in Final Fantasy VI. Whereas in the past the job focused on using the Sketch ability to paint its enemies and use their attacks, this version will do so much more.

Game Director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) stressed that the Pictomancer will fill a role somewhere between a Black Mage and the other ranged magical DPS jobs. It will have support abilities, but not be considered a full support job. Painting takes time, however, the job will have a mix of instant casts to weave with these longer spells.

Furthermore, the FFXIV Pictomancer can paint landscapes and random creatures instead of just the current enemy. These will buff allies or hinder opponents. Examples in the press footage included the Pictomancer painting a Moogle to strike its enemy. Notably, Yoshi-P stressed that the Pictomancer will not be able to resurrect allies like the Summoner or Red Mage can in FFXIV.

Other Dawntrail Jobs in FFXIV

Along with the FFXIV Pictomancer new job, Square Enix previously revealed the Viper as a melee DPS role. This job utilizes two blades that can be combined into one for stronger finishers. It shares cunning gear with the Ninja and is featured as the main character’s new job in the Dawntrail expansion trailer. Furthermore, the Beastmaster job was announced as an additional Limited Job during the Japanese Fanfest.
