This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information.

The focus of the latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens TV spot is Finn, played by actor John Boyega.

With ‘The Force Awakens’ hitting cinemas next month, there’s probably never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan. Regardless of your feelings about Disney acquiring Star Wars, you can’t fault their production skills. Not only has Disney poured resources into the production of Episode VII, they avoided doing a Terminator.

Which sounds like an obscure dance from the 80’s…

While it is true that none of Skynet’s minions will appear in the film, that’s not what I meant. By ‘Doing a Terminator’ I’m referring to the Terminator franchise’s tendency to put massive spoilers for their own movie in the trailers. By contrast, the Force Awakens crew have been very tight regarding spoilers. We know little about what the original trilogy heroes have been up to in the forty years since ‘Jedi’. And we know even less about the heroes of the new trilogy. But now, we have a bit more insight into Stormtrooper-turned-defector Finn with a new tv spot. Check it out below:

We already knew that Finn severs his ties to the ‘New Order’ (basically The Empire 2.0) early into the film. This new TV spot gives us some hints as to his motivations. ‘You don’t know what I’ve seen; we all need to run.’ This suggests that Finn’s defection is out of horror at the New Order’s plans.

Once again, we see footage of Finn wielding what appears to be Anakin’s lightsaber. The fact that they’re trying so hard to convince us that Finn is going to be this trilogy’s Jedi-in-training makes me feel that Finn isn’t actually Force-sensitive. My money’s on Rey; the desert scavenger/ tech whiz thing seems to evoke Anakin and Luke.

Other things of interest is a Stormtrooper using some kind of electrified weapon to fight against Finn’s lightsaber. Are stormtroopers being actual threats instead of inept goons? Sign me up for that.
