IGN and SEGA have officially revealed the first official gameplay footage for Sonic Frontiers as part of the IGN First exclusive event earlier this morning, which was first teased at yesterday’s announcement. This is part of SEGA’s month-long coverage deal with IGN, and more information about Sonic Frontiers’s world, gameplay, and story.
Sonic Frontiers Official Gameplay Footage and Details
The new Sonic Frontiers gameplay footage by IGN First clocks in at just over 7 minutes and provides our best look so far at the open-world SEGA promised that players for the game, which is still set to come out sometime in Holiday 2022. The trailer showed off various locations and methods of traversal in the game, including grind rails, wall running, and springs that shoot Sonic into the air. There also appear to be man puzzles scattered throughout the world needed to unlock certain areas of checkpoints.
The Sonic Frontiers gameplay footage released by SEGA has drawn comparison to other open-world games, namely The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Sonic solves puzzles and travelers the world in a similar way, though his speed adds an extra layer of movement to the based on the trailer. The official description for Sonic Frontiers reads:
“Worlds will collide in Sonic the Hedgehog’s newest adventure. An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high-velocity open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands – landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts, and more!”
Not much more information was provided about the story of the characters of Sonic Frontiers, but it is known that the world in which the game takes place is an island that Sonic finds himself stranded on at the beginning of the game. The circumstances for how and why he gets stranded will likely be revealed as we get closer to the game’s official release.
Sonic Frontiers is set to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC this holiday.
