In the US, we’re always hearing about how food companies are deceiving us. From unnecessary fats to dyes, we’re always left questioning what we’re consuming. A man from Florida who works in advertising is now speaking up about deceptive practices. He points out that food companies twist language. Food made “with 100%” of a certain meat may not actually be what you originally thought. It helps shine a light on what food companies get away with as they sell their products to us.
An advertising worker who goes by @lukegreatguy on TikTok shared with his viewers that there is a way to get a better understanding of your food labels. He starts the video by saying, “I learned something that now I can never unsee.” He shows a bag of beef jerky that says “Made with 100% beef.” It sounds innocuous but he revealed this is actually just a play on words. McDonald’s uses a similar marketing tactic, but instead it’s “100% with chicken.”
Apparently, according to Luke, “There’s a lot of other stuff in there, and some of it might not be 100% chicken. But it’s made with 100%.” He then pops a piece of beef jerky in his mouth and says, “Still tastes good.” Luke discovered this reality when he was working on an advertising project with McDonald’s in the past. It’s safe to say that his work has definitely opened his eyes to this reality.
Viewers were disgusted by what they were hearing, as nobody likes to be lied to or have information kept from them when it comes to their food. One commenter said, “Nah that should definitely be illegal lmao.”
Another commented, “I’m so tired of sleazy food company marketing.” Another commenter asked, “Can we just get food companies to make their products with the actual food that they are trying to trick people into believing?”
The truth is, we’ve always had issues with food companies not being forthcoming about what they’re putting in our food. In fact, many food additives that appear in our food are banned in other countries but not here. The future will tell if this will change but it’s safe to say that this current administration will probably not give us what we’re looking for (even if they say they will).
