Florida Governor Slammed After Designating Antifa a Terrorist Organization: ‘And what makes you a member? Criticizing DeSantis?’

Controversial

Florida has designated multiple groups as terrorist organizations after Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new law earlier this week, including “antifa,” Iranian and Muslim organizations, and others. The decision angered some Florida residents, many of whom viewed it as part of a broader effort to criminalize left-wing and non-Christian religious movements.

According to WFLA, the new law applies to groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, several cartels, and “antifa.”

The main concern raised by critics is that “antifa,” short for anti-fascist, is generally understood as an umbrella term for decentralized far-left movements rather than a single organization, making its designation as a terrorist group controversial.

This is just the latest effort by the governor in opposing groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR. Earlier this year, the governor prohibited both organizations from providing funds to organizations in the state.

Floridians Are Not Happy With DeSantis’ New Law

On Reddit’s r/Florida, residents expressed strong anger over the law. One of them said, “More useless right-wing virtue signaling. Like who is this for? Who does this help?”

Another seemingly baffled person wrote, “It amazes me that the residents of this state complain about so many things. Home prices, home insurance, public services, schools, etc., and then they see this kind of stuff and a state government that does absolutely nothing to help make any of them better. And then come November, they just vote the exact same people in.”

What appeared to frustrate many users most was what they saw as DeSantis following Trump’s lead by trying to crack down on antifa. “Wouldn’t an organization have to have actually caused some terrorism to be designated as a terrorist?” one user asked. Someone else responded: “And what makes you a member? Criticizing DeSantis?”

Others mocked the Florida governor: “DeSantis is like those corporate advertisement departments that see a trend and latch onto it far too late, making them look incredibly corny and out of touch.”

It remains to be seen how the law will be enforced, but many users expect the controversy to continue. One user summarized the thread’s overall sentiment: “I truly hate it here.”
