If there is one political figure from Florida who is often the talk of the state, it is Governor DeSantis, and usually not for the right reasons. We all know that this politician has done and said some strange things in the past, and today it isn’t the exception. Apparently, the Governor is saying that he wants Florida locals to stop paying property taxes and instead charge Canadians more. As you can imagine, this didn’t sit well with many, as many in the state are already criticizing DeSantis’ latest claim.
The report, which has now gone viral on several news outlets, claims that DeSantis recently said that those in Florida should pay less in property taxes or nothing at all. According to the above information, those with a property valued at around $250k or less would pay nothing.
This sounded off several alarms, especially since property tax money is necessary for the state to function. For the unaware, some of these taxes pay for several public services and other things in Florida. These proposed cuts could affect that, or could they?
The report also mentions that the ones paying more in taxes would be Canadians, as DeSantis allegedly said: “I don’t want to give Canadians a tax cut.”
Unexpectedly, many jumped to the defense of Canadians, saying that this would affect them greatly. Some have even pointed out that they supposedly pay a lot of taxes already and don’t even get to vote in anything pertaining to the state or the country at times, at least according to Reddit. So, instead of many netizens backing this proposal, it seems that it blew up, causing a lot of backlash not only for the Governor but for his political party.
Florida Residents Ashamed of the GOP’s ‘Tactics’
So far, many have called DeSantis’ latest statement another “tactic” by the GOP, and one that is supposedly pitting those in the state against Canadians. Still, at least those on Reddit have not fallen for that and have stood up for those moving into the state from the north.
“I’m old, born and raised here, lifelong resident. Canadians have been bringing their money down here for a long, long time. They don’t vote, or have any say, and they pay tax at the highest rate we have now. Last I checked, they were our friends and allies.“
And of course, there were many who just shamed this bill, saying that it wasn’t a good idea.
“This bill is a disaster.”
“I cannot wait for DeSantis to be gone.”
As you can see, this situation backfired on the GOP again, and many hope the bill won’t pass.
