While street fighting is largely illegal in the U.S., it’s not uncommon to see a physical altercation break out in public between two citizens who have fallen out over some personal indiscretion. In fact, in New York city, street fighting is allegedly on an upwards trend and has seen an increase, according to a 2022 report by the National Institute of Justice, per Krav Mega Experts. Still, even though street fighting can lead to a first-degree misdemeanour charge like an affray, or even more severe charges like battery or assault, they still take place regularly on the streets. Take, for instance, this street fight which broke out in St. Augustine, Florida recently, which saw two men duking it out in front of multiple passersby.
The one-minute snippet of footage opens on a sunny sidewalk in St. Augustine, Florida and is recorded from the perspective of a witness sat in the car who is at the scene. Several nearby vehicles are stationary — likely watching the altercation unfold — and just behind the cars, you can see two men squaring up to each other. It’s unclear what kickstarted the confrontation between the two men, as the buildup before the fight is not shown.
One man is dressed in a grey hoodie, black shorts, and a black baseball cap, and the other is sporting white shorts and a pale yellow t-shirt. Initially, the man in a grey hoodie is the one who appears to get physical first, as he forcefully pushes the other man away. They continue to face off against one another, and talk to one another, though it’s impossible to discern what is being said.
However, while it’s a little tricky to make out, when the man in grey goes to walk away, he spits at the other man. This instigates the physical altercation, as the man in yellow then smacks the other guy in the back of his head with his phone. There’s then a tussle between the two of them, while another woman in a black top and white trousers tries to break up the fight. As she does so, she screams loudly. The two men even fall to the floor, where the fight continues to escalate further. Horns blare in the background as the scuffle intensifies.
Another passerby attempts to split up the fight and even manages to pull the two men apart, holding the man in a yellow t-shirt in a headlock. As the clip comes to a close, two police officers arrive on the scene and hurry over to offer their support.
Of course, the footage has sparked plenty of comments online. The majority of reactions over on Reddit largely focus on the loud horns in the background, as well as the woman’s screaming. One Redditor penned, “The idiot on the horn!!!” with another comment coming in expressing, “At least it almost drowned out the screeching lady.” Accompanying these remarks was another dry joke, exclaiming, “I’m really glad it helped stop the fight“. Lastly, a fourth commenter summarized the incident in a nutshell, writing, “dont spit on someone and not expect to get ur sh*t clocked [sic]”.
It remains unclear whether police charged either of the men for the physical altercation.
