A Catholic priest in Oakland Park, Florida, has kept feeding the homeless for decades, fulfilling his many duties as a religious figure for the community. However, for more than a decade, he has racked up over $500,000 in fines after a rezoning of the area prohibited him from doing so.
As reported by CBS News, the priest in question is Fr. Bob Caudill, who has served his community, including feeding the homeless at the soup kitchen All Saints Catholic Mission, for the past 36 years. However, things changed back in 2014, when the Florida city “decided to rezone the power line area.”
Caudill explained that they told him that he needed to stop feeding the ones in need in the new zoning. He, however, feeling that his calling stood taller than what the city demanded of him, continued his selfless mission. That way, the homeless were treated with food, showers, and, of course, spiritual guidance.
By doing so, however, the Florida priest faced consequences. For every day that he spent feeding the homeless, he was fined $125, and authorities put a lien on Caudill’s church building. As per the Tampa Bay Times, he even moved the soup kitchen into the church. Still, the fines didn’t stop.
Decade-Long Legal Battle
In total, Fr. Caudill has been fined more than $500,000. Of course, this didn’t go uncontested, as the Florida priest has continuously sued the city since 2016, which at one time argued that feeding the homeless is not part of Caudill’s religion.
The case eventually went to trial back in January 2026. However, city attorneys managed to successfully get the case thrown out. Still, Caudill, who is not planning to pay a single cent of his half-million fine. He hopes that the case will return to court shortly.
“So, Christ was very clear about us helping his people, and it doesn’t matter what stage of life or who you are,” the priest said. Everybody’s just a child of God, point blank, right?“
After finding out the details of the case, users online were left in shock, blasting the city of Oakland Park. One user said, “This is a different type of evil.” Another netizen commented, “This is absolutely pathetic. I remember a time when priests and nuns were very respected in the community.” A third commented, “The city should stop harassing the priest and the crew serving and caring for the poor.”
