As the price of electricity in Florida has reportedly risen lately, locals are increasingly frustrated by higher bills. The discussion highlights how these changes appear to be putting the finances of some Floridians under pressure. With that in mind, a Floridian started a discussion on Reddit’s r/florida, asking if others had noticed an increase in electricity bills. The post quickly gained traction, surpassing 160 comments.
In the post, the Florida user asks for advice, saying they feel they are spending too much on electricity in 2026. According to them, their bill has been “creeping up,” so they are looking for ways to make costs more predictable, as the spikes have been an issue.
There is more than one possible reason why Floridians feel that the cost of electricity has been rising. For one, Florida regulators approved a four-year rate agreement that allows Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to increase electricity prices to fund infrastructure investments. Recent reports from The Miami Times also highlight issues with high energy bills, stating that the FPL is making record profits.
Floridians Slam Recent Electricity Bill Hikes
In the comments, essentially everyone agreed with the person who started the discussion. One of the top comments said, “You are not ‘feeling like’. You ARE paying way more (for electricity) this year.” Others also reported that their “usage went down, but the bill is still higher due to rate increases.”
One user also described the issue as “greedy rate hikes.” According to them, “If you want to stop getting legally robbed by this monopoly, your only real alternatives are aggressively cutting your own usage or moving to a city with a local municipal utility that actually answers to residents.”
One option raised by users was to forgo electricity from large companies altogether. “My choice to go solar may pay off after all,” one person wrote. Another explained the costs involved. According to them, after investing in expensive solar panels, their bill dropped from $650 to “$35 a month.”
Considering how often the cost of living has been raised as a major issue in the United States recently, it is not surprising to see so many social media users complaining about how high energy bills affect them. It remains to be seen whether prices will continue to rise or if Floridians will see lower bills in the future.
