A Florida teacher, Ms. Y, says it’s not educators’ fault that students aren’t learning. She claims that it’s the classes that aren’t paying attention, stating, “I promise you…the teachers are teaching!! Maybe it’s the fact that the students aren’t studenting.” Her TikTok video has over 594,000 views, over 86,000 likes, and over 1,000 comments.
Ms. Y is a fifth-grade teacher who used to teach in Texas before relocating to Florida. In the video, she claims she knows from personal experience that students aren’t paying attention. She was inspired to make the video to call out the assumption that “teachers aren’t teaching.” The teacher states that she had a class where she allegedly had to do “cartwheels and backflips to get these kids to pay attention.” This led her to do a social experiment to see if they were paying attention. In her classes, she puts a slide up on the board letting the kids know what test they’re taking and what to do when they finish. So one time, she “just put all of the answers” to a test in the corner of the screen.
Additionally, she states this occurred “well into the year,” so they knew the procedure. Ms. Y claims she went over the slide before the test, stating, “I literally put all the answers on the [screen].” These were the answers to the entire test. As for the results, the teacher explains, “Out of 72 students, 4 students looked up at the board long enough to figure out the answers.” Furthermore, she claims the overall results weren’t great on the test. Ms. Y adds, “The rest of the kids failed. It’s not that the teachers aren’t teaching.”
Florida Teacher Has Fellow Educators Fired Up
The Florida teacher’s words have many fellow educators fired up in the comments. One educator claims she gave out study guides with the answers that could be used on the test, stating, “Which, by the way, we went over every single problem the day before. And still 75% of my kids failed.” Another argues, “Because we are managing behaviors all day!!!!” Another agrees, claiming they spend more time managing students’ behavior. They argue, “It’s not a teaching problem. It’s a listening and behaving problem. It’s a parent problem.”
Meanwhile, many argue that it’s parents at home who aren’t parenting, allegedly leading to problems at school. One commenter argues, “It’s also because parents aren’t reading to their children anymore at home.” Another adds, “I will say this and stand by this…. Parents are not parenting… the learned helplessness is mind-blowing!” Another commenter claims, “‘Teachers aren’t teaching!’ Your 3rd grader has to ask ME what their own last name is 🙄.”
