I’ve not managed to see Free Guy yet, despite writing for a gaming and film (among other things) website, but judging from the early box office figures, people seem to like it. Free Guy has managed to perform strongly over its second weekend in cinemas post-premiere. Free Guy grew its box office gross by over $17.5 million over the last week, bringing its overall box office gross to just over $52 million. That’s before major overseas markets like China get a hold of the film, so it looks to be a healthy take for 20th Century Studios and Disney.
Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds (of Deadpool fame) who plays an NPC named Guy in a video game, unaware that his life is entirely secondary to real players’ creative and destructive whims. He’s joined by Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) and must try to figure out his new role within the game.
When a bank teller discovers he’s actually a background player in an open-world video game, he decides to become the hero of his own story — one that he can rewrite himself. In a world where there’s no limits, he’s determined to save the day his way before it’s too late, and maybe find a little romance with the coder who conceived him.” – movie description
The film hit cinemas just last week, and currently sits at a 7.6 on IMDb, which isn’t exactly anything bad, and Ryan Reynolds revealed that Free Guy did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel at some point in the future. Hopefully, this leads to an increase in video game movies, because heaven knows we need to swing the perception that all game movies are bad.
Other big performers at the box office this week have been Paw Patrol, Jungle Cruise, and Don’t Breathe 2.
