The Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida has rolled out a new community outreach initiative that is already drawing mixed reactions on X. The department recently unveiled its newly purchased branded ice cream truck, which it plans to drive through neighborhoods across Orange County while offering free ice cream to children. Officials say the goal is to create more positive interactions with local youth and, over time, help rebuild trust between the community and law enforcement.

In a video shared by the Sheriff’s Office, deputies are seen riding in a brightly decorated truck and making stops to hand out ice cream through the service window to children lined up outside. “We’re giving away free ice cream,” the office said. “We are not charging anyone for the ice cream.” According to the department, the truck will also make appearances at different community engagement events, including neighborhood barbecues, picnics, and nonprofit gatherings.

Truck Purchased With Seized Funds

As explained in the announcement, the ice cream truck was purchased entirely with funds seized from drug dealers under forfeiture laws. “Those drug dealers we arrest, when they have cash on them, we seize it through our forfeiture laws and then we’re able to use that and put it right back into our community,” the office said.

The department also encouraged residents to follow its social media pages, where officials plan to post updates about which neighborhoods the truck will visit and when it will be available.

Online Reactions to the Sheriff’s Office Announcement

Netizens were very divided in the comments section after watching the announcement.

Some people reacted positively, praising the idea and applauding the department’s approach to community engagement. “Love this! Such a cool idea,” one person wrote. Another commented, “What a great idea :) I even went to your website to see if you needed volunteers 😁 So creative. Good job.” A third described it as a “brilliant way to rebuild trust within communities,” while another called it the “best use of funds.”

Others, however, were far more critical. One commenter said bluntly, “No one wanted this. Cut back on taxes.” Another questioned the funding altogether, saying it “seems like money laundering.” Someone else argued that the initiative missed the mark, writing, “Delivering diabetes to poor kids is not the best use of seized drug money it just substitutes one drug for another.”
