An alarming incident took place in Osceola, Arkansas, where the chief of police was accused of slapping a paraplegic man. In a TikTok, a journalist, Omani Williams, stood at the spot where the alleged assault took place. She inserted the clip showing the chief of police and the paraplegic man surrounded by witnesses. As seen in the video, after exchanging a few words, the officer slapped the man in the wheelchair, saying, “You’re not going to talk to me like that,” attracting screams from the onlookers.
He then turned around the man in a wheelchair and held him in a chokehold, as witnesses remained frantic. The journalist noted that the incident had escalated from a fight among teenagers in the neighborhood. The police were called to the scene, and tensions between the parents and the authorities began to rise, leading to the incident.
According to Action News 5, the Osceola, Arkansas, police chief, identified as Robert Ephlin, had been in office for only two weeks before the incident. The paraplegic man, Danarius Williams, explained that he was only trying to get more information about what had happened before the situation escalated. Williams shared that Ephlin had his finger in his face, and he only waved his finger out of his face, without touching him.
Public Outcry Over Police Chief’s Actions
Many netizens stormed the comments to express frustration regarding the police chief’s conduct and excessive use of force. Many called for legal ramifications for Ephlin. One user predicted a dramatic reversal of roles, writing, “From sheriff to inmate.” Another user generalized the behavior as a common pattern in the region: “Classic Southern policing, first they attack you and then charge you for defending yourself.”
One individual argued that the officer lacked the temperament required for the profession, saying, “He has no business being a cop. There’s a level of self-control you need to have. He just doesn’t have it. Nothing justifies slapping a guy in a wheelchair because he’s argumentative. If he’s breaking the law or causing a disturbance, arrest him.” Others hoped the man in a wheelchair would take legal action against the police department. “Hope the victim sues tf out of the department and the ex-chief personally. This is unbelievable.” Another user asked, “Why are so many cops thin-skinned?”
Following the immense outrage among Arkansas residents and netizens alike, the city issued a statement noting that the mayor had requested an independent review of the incident. Many are far from happy with the police department.
