With Genshin Impact taking the gaming world by storm, the rise of gacha games seems unstoppable. While these free-to-play games may appear innocent at first, they hide darker secrets that can disrupt the lives of some players. Though it is possible to enjoy these games without spending any money, they are designed to entice players into making in-app purchases. If you’re not careful, you may end up spending far more than you intended, which is the reality for many young adults in Japan.

Almost 19% of Japanese people in their 20s have spent so much money on gacha they struggled with covering living expenses, survey reveals

A recent survey by SMBC Consumer Finance revealed that nearly 19% of Japanese young adults admitted to spending too much money on gacha. This excessive spending has begun to affect their ability to live comfortably. Money that could have been used for essential expenses like rent and food is instead being poured into buying JPGs in gacha games.

However, the situation is even more dire when looking specifically at male gacha players in Japan. While only 14.8% of Japanese women reported being unable to cover their expenses due to gacha spending, the number for Japanese men is much higher at 22.8%.

To make matters worse, the number of people making microtransactions has increased by almost 6% compared to last year’s statistics. The survey also addresses the issue of regret over these purchases. As with the previous survey, Japanese men (27.2%) are more likely to regret their microtransactions than women (20.6%).

The negative effects of gacha games have long been an open secret among gamers. While not many are surprised by the statistics, it still raises some eyebrows to hear that there are people who can’t control their spending. “A fool and his money, all that,” one Redditor remarked.

Others pointed out that gacha players should be more aware that, despite the appealing characters and attractive packaging, the system itself is essentially a form of gambling. However, some argued that there might be deeper factors driving this trend. One user suggested that the isolation many Japanese people face could be a major reason behind the addiction to gacha. “When your life consists of working and sleeping, these small, easily accessible games offer one of the few forms of escape… Things are getting similar here too,” one user commented.

Some argued that these statistics could serve as a basis for introducing regulations to gacha games. Currently, these games occupy a grey area, somewhere between outright gambling and traditional games. Without clear government intervention and laws, more people may continue to fall into the trap of gambling addiction.
