During a recent appearance at WonderCon, writer Gail Simone offered a few details about her upcoming Uncanny X-Men. The series is one of three that leads readers into the next era of mutants known as X-Men: From The Ashes. Simone is joined by artist David Marquez to take a new group of X-Men on this next journey. Marvel has already revealed that the new Uncanny X-Men will consist of Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, Gambit, and Rogue. Now, Simone reveals that four new mutants will also be involved.
Gail Simone’s Uncanny X-Men
Gail Simone’s run with Uncanny X-Men finds her group making a base in Louisiana. Rogue is leading this new group as they work to protect the world that hates and fears them. This series takes the X-Men back to classic adventures where they must save the day in the way only the X-Men can. For Simone, she enjoys the X-Men because there is something that makes them feel different from the rest of the world. Of course, this is a great metaphor for how most people feel in the real world.
So, understanding that appeal, Simone made four new mutants for the series. These new guys will have powers based on the idea of hidden disabilities in the real world. Having something within that makes you feel different or alienated from everyone else. Plus, the series’ setting of New Orleans helps add a Southern Gothic feel to it.
A New Era
Back at SXSW Marvel finally unveiled the plans for the X-Men following the end of the Krakoan Age. This includes three new flagship series that will focus the mutants back on what has made them special throughout the years. Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman will lead a group of X-Men in Alaska within X-Men. Meanwhile, Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero bring Exceptional X-Men to Chicago under the tutelage of Kate Pryde. Of course, rounding out the three is Gail Simone and David Marquez’ Uncanny X-Men.
Uncanny X-Men #1 is out on 08/07.
