Canadian fans of Game of Thrones can watch the acclaimed fantasy show by purchasing HBO through their Bell subscriptions, but those who aren’t with the Toronto-based media corporation were previously out of luck. But that is about to change.
The entire first season of Game of Thrones will air on CTV beginning in August. The show moving to basic cable is a big move, especially considering HBO’s exclusivity with Bell media up north. US citizens have the option to subscribe to HBO Now, a subscription surface for the popular channel. But those dwelling in Canada can only watch it if they receive satellite TV from Bell.
Bell owns the rights to the show in Canada, so this can be taken as a show of good faith that others will not be able to indulge in the high fantasy, politics and intrigue of one of the best shows on TV. So if you are in Canada and haven’t watched the show, take this opportunity to watch the first season and see how you like it.
The sixth season of Game of Thrones just ended recently, bringing in record viewings for the series. The next two season will only have 13 episodes in total, resulting in shorter seasons. Part of what makes Game of Thrones so fantastic is that it perfectly paces its seasons in order to create peaks and valleys of tension. The series has fallen into a bit of a pattern regarding which episodes hold the biggest moments, so a shorter season could let them reinvent the pacing slightly.
The first episode airs on CTV Monday, August 8. For more Game of Thrones news, opinions, and reviews, stay tuned to The Nerd Stash.
